Most Common Needs

There are common needs in food pantries that you should consider as you begin to plan a food pantry. Begin with unexpired shelf-stable items to stock your shelves. Our pantry stocks food and personal care items, which include hygiene and household items since we have residential housing lodges on campus.

Keep in mind that the most common needs may not be those that are donated to your pantry. Oftentimes, dietary-specific items, as well as religious and culturally-sensitive, and ethnic foods or products are in high demand and infrequently donated.

Consider what your students will use and what they really need. Not sure? Ask them!

Stocking a food pantry

Shelf-stable products include cereals, crackers, peanut (and other nut) butters, jelly and jams, pastas, pasta sauce, canned items (soups, vegetables, fruits, full meals), dry potatoes, rice, beans, jello, applesauce, canned meats, noodles, granola and cereal bars, desserts, and various other snack products that are easily accessible for students to grab and go.
